Nina Alejandra de La Habana (race: human / ethnicity: hispanic) is also known under the nicknames Topaz, Niña (Spanish: "Girl"), Mami or Mama Niña. It is rumored that a vault dweller once called her Castro for a reason unknown to her. She was born in Havana, Cuba, at around 2278, meaning that she is estimated about 24 years old (seen from today: 2302). She speaks Spanish as well as English, the later with a strong Cuban Spanish accent. Nina is versed in classical housewife works, gastronomy (cook/waitress). From her the time of being member of the Scorpions raid gang, a gang known to consist of cowards, she also knows the common violent practices of Wasteland raiders. As mother to a son born in about 2296 (Juan Miguel, 6 y.o.a.) though she despises any kind of violence against herself and her family, and tries to stay out of it. From the father of her child, a wandering scavenger, she learned how to survive in the wastelands, to seek things needed, and to barter with merchants in order to sell the scrap. Nina never attended any kind of school nor was actively taught classes like Language Arts (incl. reading and writing), Math, Science, History and Geography, or Religion. English she learned because she had to after moving from Cuba to Arizona with her mother, and basic calculating she learned to prevent being fleeced during raid loot distribution.

== Character & Personality ==

Nina, a young mother of a small child, is a good heart, or tries to be, for her family and diner guests. Nevertheless she tries to stay out of all kinds of harm risking conflicts ranging from beatings to deadly shootings, which can mean that she either becomes totally passive and accepting, that she runs away, that she hides when such breaks out, or that she just freezes in place. In fact, due to that and due to her past as member of the rather not courageous Scorpions raider gang, she is an outright coward. But she has a lot of pride still even if her dignity is long lost - she would never admit to be a coward if she can prevent it. Due to how she was risen in her childhood, she also can show more hot temper than healthy for herself - or for those close to her - which she often cannot control. Neither does she often think about the consequences of what she says, even less when her temper breaks out, and by that she runs herself and her family not rarely into trouble.

== History & Diary ==

=== Childhood in Cuba & Arizona ===

Nina Alejandra was born in the ruins of Havana, Cuba, to a toygirl of a plantation owner who raised Brahmin cattle for their dung - with which he created Jet for export to New California, the Mojave Wasteland, the Capital Wasteland and even The Commonwealth. Her mother, who came originally from Cien Rosas on Cuba, was just called Chica, and her father was either the landlord or one of his men - it is unknown.

To earn food and shelter, Nina had to work - collecting Brahmin dung - from since she could literally stand on her own feet on. She was about ten years of age when her mother Chica used a chance to flee from the planter, with the help of shore pirates who brought them to Yucatán, Mexico. From there mother and daughter traveled west then north through Mexico in the hopes to find a better life in New California. To reach New California though, a long and perilious way through entire Mexico including the Sonora desert and the Mojave Wasteland waited for the two.

Chica and her daughter Nina should never arrive even in the Mojave Wastelands though as they where intercepted near Tonalea/Arizona by the Scorpions, a band of raiders which had fled from the Mojave Wasteland after the events of 2281. Again her mother Chica became a playmate, this time of a gang sergeant, a fat and filthy, brutal and self-righteous man named Cletus Jack Jackson. Yet as rude and abusive he was to Chica, holding her more like a pet than a companion, as loving he was to Nina. Chika turned to Jet to blur at least her perception of her fate, soon to be heavily addicted and more often on a high than able to think rationally anymore. Meanwhile Cletus saw and loved little Nina as if she was his own daughter and blood. He called her Topaz or Niña and pampered and spoiled her beyond her imagination.

Unlike other kids so, eleven years old Nina was even allowed to work in the gang's bar, to make herself useful and proud, giving her the chance to learn to cook, to clean, to serve guests and to party with them as long as the night lasted. This though came for a price, as Nina became addicted to alcohol and tobacco from early age on - the other raiders were just amused by that. From the age of twelve years on Cletus began to teach her to fight, with lead pipes, knifes, guns and rifles, and took her also to accompany the gang on raids. Nina learned to shoot, to shoot people, to kill people, and she became good at it.

=== Youth in Arizona ===

Years later, Nina was about eighteen years of age meanwhile, Yvette who was the gang leader, decided it would be time to carry out their revenge on the Fiends, a gang from the Mojave Wastelands which had bullied and harassed the Scorpions for years and decades and finally driven them away from those Wastelands. Yet, going against a superior enemy is totally different than waylaying single wasteland wanderers or raiding lone farm cottages, and so it came as it had to come: Yvette failed in both planning and leading the raid. The raid ended in a sheer chaos and a cruel massacre on their own side, a big defeat. From near all Scorpion gang raiders who went to raid, only few returned home, and most of these few even were mutilated and crippled for the rest of their lives.

Nina did not die, but neither did she return home. Nina was a coward, like near all Scorpions raiders had been, and had tried to run away facing the chaos - leading to her getting lost in the chaos of the raid and these unknown gang turfs. Confused by the dust clouds of the battle, later by the fata morganas, air layer based reflections of heat and the searing sun in the Mojave Wastelands, she lost her orientation and stumbled alone and unoriented through the area, just trying to get away from the turf of the Fiends. Nina should see Chica, her mother, nor Cletus, her stepfather, never again.

=== The years of Love and being Lost ===

The lone wanderer Joel found Nina, dehydrated, hungry and scared as she was, and coddled her up and allowed her, after hours of her heartbreaking begging, to wander with him on his aimless scavenging tours through the wastelands. Joel had no home, and so they slept where the nightfall caught them, just now and then they went to settlements to sell or trade their gimcrack. Nina and Joel became lovers.

Despite being a coward, weak and dishonorable, Nina had lots of pride and egoism, and she had the fiery, hot-blooded temper of her hispanic ancestors raging through her veins and mind. Selfishly, opportunistically, and aiming for a better fate than to become a toygirl to a tramp scavenger like her mother Chica, and even though Joel did nothing to deserve this, she turned his life a nightmare with her demands, her jealousy and fury fits. At first Joel gave in to them, then he tried to ease her by calm and rational talking, even with just listening. Nothing helped. She did not learn, she demanded more and more. Even for the most obvious of her fails she never applogized, instead let him get some, allowed him onto the third base, as distraction from admitting to have failed.

Nina never realized, never admitted, that it was her own fault, her own temper that drove a wedge into a relationship. At a point, out of pride, she dismissed and quitted on Joel, outright drove him off. He had honestly loved and cared for her. They had been together but a few months, now Nina was alone again in the Mojave Wastelands but for Perro, Joel's dog, whom she had kept. Nina did not know at that time that she carried Joel's child under her heart.

The Cuban woman decided to go where her mother Chica had aimed to go: to New California, with the hope for a better life. But she went east instead of west from the Mojave Wastelands, not being any good yet in navigation. It must have been in the ruins of Kingman in Arizona when she met another lost woman, Kara, who was a former cook from a luxury casino in New Vegas, and who fled after the slavers and crucifiers of Cesar's Legion had attacked the strip.

The two women agreed on a common goal, New California, and both went east, the wrong way, to follow the old Interstate I-40 E. They made but very slow progress, even less when Nina's baby belly grew. They had to scavenge for goods, fight or rather hide from enemies, recover from wounds, build shelters, or remain in a small settlement to work for gear needed to continue their journey. Kara had to learn from Nina how to survive in the wastelands, and Nina depended on Kara to help her and her baby, a son she named Juan-Miguel. The two women fell in love, and together with Juan they became a small family, Perro always on their side.

Six years the little family needed to journey down the 1.500 miles of the I-40 E in the end, but New California never appeared. Instead it was New Orleans, Louisiana, the shining jewel of the Gulf Commonwealth at the delta of the Ol'Man River, The Big Muddy, Old Blue... the Mississippi River.

=== A first own business in New Orleans ===

Nina and Kara wondered where fate had brought them, but Nina was weary of traveling, tired as young mother, and scared from fights and killings now that she had to care for her own child. The night in the swampy jungles of the Mississippi delta was still boiling hot, when the small family carefully snuck into the ruined city of New Orleans. They found an empty house and claimed it as their home. It was the perfect spot as it turned out in the beginning, for a family: Deep in the Ward, an area protected by the Wardens who made an effort to protect travelers, settlers, and caravans within the Ward from threats such as the Drowned, feral ghouls, super mutants, and the ever present threat of raiders and criminal gangs. And also, Nina and Kara found the barely ruined remains of an old, pre-war diner.

The women worked hard to fix the holes in the walls, to trade with other survivors for repairs of water purifying installations and power generators, and it took them weeks but then the generators hummed again, and the old light bulbs resumed to shine, the hearth plates to sizzle from heating ages old fat glueing on them. They invested and gave their sweat, their blood, and also their dignity and bodies to get their claimed diner fixed and running.

Before they owned nothing but their lives, their disesteemed skills and the shreds clinging to their sweaty, starved bodies. Now Nina and Kara had a new home and, too, a business of their own: The [[Doo Wop Diner]]!

Able to cook and to serve, they decided to dare this adventure, and began to cut deals for raw food deliveries, scavenged drinks such as Whiskeys or Nuka Cola or self made moonshines from the area. And it did not take long until the first hungry townspeople nosed into the diner, to find warm welcome, tasty food and thirst quenching drinks after a hard days work of slaying feral ghouls, of tinkering goods for others, or whatever their business was.
